Fully launching at the beginning of March 2022, Amazon Luna gives subscribers access to a streaming library of games spread across five channels: Luna+, Family, Retro, Ubisoft+, and Jackbox Games. Every channel caters to a different audience, and they all cover an array of genres to a certain extent. Overall, there are more than a hundred games available on the cloud gaming service, giving users a wide selection of titles to pick and choose from.

RELATED: What Is Amazon Luna?

Anyone interested in subscribing to Amazon Luna specifically to play role-playing games should prioritize the Luna+ channel since it has a considerably large selection of genre releases than the platform’s other options. That’s not to say the Retro, Family, and Ubisoft+ channels are completely devoid of RPGs, but their pickings are slim, with each one only having a handful of titles that fit the genre. What are the best RPGs on Amazon Luna?

Newcomers to Amazon Luna who are tempted to try the gaming streaming service can check out the following links to get started:

Yakuza: Like A Dragon

Amazon Luna Channel Luna+
Release Date November 10, 2020
Subgenre Turn-Based RPG
How Long to Beat (Main Story) 45 Hours
Amazon Luna Link Yakuza: Like A Dragon

After completing Kiryu’s story with Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, Sega’s franchise opted for a fresh start by introducing a new location, protagonist, and combat format. Yakuza: Like a Dragon swaps out the series’ trademark beat ’em up gameplay for a turn-based system inspired by JRPG classics such as Dragon Quest. Unsurprisingly, this change came with a few growing pains, but Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio still did an admirable job of refreshing this long-running franchise.

Something that has not changed with Yakuza: Like a Dragon is the stellar writing. The 2020 sequel retains the franchise’s penchant for humor, emotional depth, and moments of pure epicness. As always in Sega’s series, the side quests are phenomenal, regardless of whether they are aiming for the funny bone or heartstrings.

For those who prefer Kiryu’s era or beat ’em up gameplay, Luna+ also has Yakuza 0. The platform also has both Judgment games, a spin-off series that focuses on a cop-turned-private detective. These titles are just as good as the mainline games, and someone does not have to be familiar with Yakuza to jump into them.

Release Date August 18, 2022
Subgenre Action RPG
How Long to Beat (Main Story) 8 Hours
Amazon Luna Link Thymesia

Added to Amazon Luna in September 2022, Thymesia is a Soulslike RPG that takes heavy inspiration from Bloodborne. This is evident in the game’s Gothic aesthetic and fast-paced combat, although there are enough differences to set it apart from the PS4 exclusive. Thymesia casts players as a plague doctor suffering from amnesia, a situation that can only be redeemed by taking on an array of impressive bosses.

RELATED: Beginner Tips For Thymesia

A largely linear experience, Thymesia guides players through a handful of eye-catching areas that are quite impressive in their own right. Combat is the name of the game here, and while not without some frustrations, it is enjoyable for the most part. Like Bloodborne, Thymesia prioritizes dodging and parries over things like shields, giving way to plenty of high-octane fights that require quick reflexes.

The Legend Of Heroes: Trails Of Cold Steel 3 & 4

Nihon Falcom has been quietly producing excellent JRPGs since the early ’90s, and Trails of Cold Steel is arguably the most newcomer-friendly subseries in the studio’s The Legend of Heroes franchise. Set in a war-torn world and told from the perspective of a group of military students, Trails of Cold Steel blends political and social intrigue with a focus on interpersonal relationships and character development.

Each entry lasts more than 50 hours, and they combine to tell one of the best modern stories in gaming. In Western regions, Trails of Cold Steel 3 and 4 are only available on Amazon Luna when it comes to subscription services, and they could easily keep someone busy for a couple of months. That said, as these games build upon each other, it is not recommended for newcomers to jump into the series with Trails of Cold Steel 3. If nothing else, they should read a detailed summary of the previous games’ events.

Adventure Time: Pirates Of The Enchiridion

Amazon Luna’s Family and Retro channels are not havens for RPGs; these subscriptions are simply not designed to prioritize long sprawling games packed to the brim with mechanics and complex narratives. That said, Adventure Time: Pirates of the Enchiridion is a slight exception, even if the game is pretty short and basic for the genre.

The land of Ooo has sprung a leak, prompting Finn and Jake to head out on a swashbuckling journey to defeat some pirates and return things to the status quo. Offering a simple turn-based battle system and a streamlined campaign, Pirates of the Enchiridion is perfect for children looking to dive into their first RPG. Fans of Adventure Time should also give this licensed game a try.

Victor Vran

Amazon Luna Channel Luna+
Release Date July 24, 2015
Subgenre Action RPG
How Long to Beat (Main Story) 11 Hours
Amazon Luna Link Victor Vran

At a glance, Victor Vran might appear to be cut from the same cloth as Diablo and other isometric hack and slash games, however, it shouldn’t take long for that idea to be dispelled. This action RPG prioritizes its combat over things like loot or customization, in fact, there are no character classes since players are specifically role-playing as the titular demon hunter. Basically, the protagonist is along the lines of The Witcher‘s Geralt rather than Skyrim‘s Dragonborn, albeit with some more freedom since Victor Vran can utilize different weapon types.

While it might lack some features synonymous with the role-playing genre, Victor Vran‘s gameplay is more than fun enough to pick up the slack. Skill-based and fast-paced, Vran will be dodging and slashing his way through Gothic halls and dirty alleyways as he faces off against the many demons roaming Zagoravia’s streets. The combat is flashy and satisfying, and the game even supports co-op.

Release Date October 8, 2019
Subgenre Turn-Based Platformer
How Long to Beat (Main Story) 20 Hours
Amazon Luna Link Indivisible

From the minds that blessed the world with Skullgirls comes Indivisible, a creative action RPG that oozes personality out of every frame. Set in the land of Loka, players control Ajna, a teenage girl who possesses the power to absorb people into her mind. After her village is destroyed and her father is killed, the protagonist goes on a wild and memorable journey to uncover the reason behind this senseless slaughter.

Indivisible’s traversal is done through platforming sections; while these control beautifully, they do suffer from some pacing issues. Combat takes the form of turn-based battles built upon a combo system, one packed with options thanks to the game’s vast roster of party members. As good as the gameplay gets, Indivisible excels in its characters and world-building, two things that place the game firmly among the best RPGs on Amazon Luna.

How Long to Beat (Main Story) 35 Hours
Amazon Luna Link CrossCode

Throwbacks to the SNES era are hardly in short supply in 2022, and every month seems to contain a handful of indie titles worth checking out. CrossCode is a must-play for anyone fond of classic ’90s action RPGs, but Radical Fish’s game amounts to far more than just a nostalgia trip. Set in a futuristic MMO, CrossCode follows Lea, a girl stripped of memories and the ability to talk. As she ventures out on a quest to discover herself, the story gradually peels back the layers as it reveals what is truly going on in this world.

RELATED: Best Indie RPGs Of The Last 5 Years (According To Metacritic)

CrossCode‘s combat is fantastic. Blending melee and ranged weaponry, Lea is responsive and simply fun to control, and she also unlocks new abilities as the campaign progresses. Visually, the title’s pixilated graphics are gorgeous, ranking right up there with nearly any indie release.

Child Of Light

Amazon Luna Channel Ubisoft+
Release Date April 30, 2014
Subgenre Platformer, Turn-Based
How Long to Beat (Main Story) 11 Hours
Amazon Luna Link Child Of Light

Amazon Luna’s Ubisoft+ channel features all the usual (and often great) suspects: Far Cry, Assassin’s Creed, and Watch Dogs. Some of these franchises’ games have RPG elements to them, but they typically lean into action-adventure territory; consequently, Child of Light serves as a refreshing change of pace from the standard Ubisoft formula.

A side-scrolling RPG that has an engaging active-time combat system reminiscent of Square Enix’s ’90s classics, Child of Light is absolutely beautiful, both visually and narratively. The gameplay is easy to grasp but also deep enough to remain engaging throughout the relatively short campaign.

Valkyria Chronicles 4

Amazon Luna Channel Luna+
Release Date September 25, 2018
Subgenre Strategy Turn-Based RPG
How Long to Beat (Main Story) 37 Hours
Amazon Luna Link Valkyria Chronicles 4

Sega’s Valkyria Chronicles combines various genres – third-person shooters, tactics, visual novels, turn-based JRPGs – to create something utterly unlike anything else on the market. More importantly, these elements came together seamlessly, resulting in an experience that works well on every level rather than feeling like a hodgepodge of scattered ideas.

RELATED: The Best Shooters On Amazon Luna

Valkyria Chronicles 4 does not require familiarity with the previous entries to appreciate since the story presents a different perspective on the Second Europan War. Challenging gameplay, a strong narrative, and gorgeous visuals are just some things people can look forward to when playing Valkyria Chronicles 4.

Amazon Luna Channel Family
Release Date November 13, 2019
Subgenre Action-Adventure
How Long to Beat (Main Story) 10 Hours
Amazon Luna Link Sparklite

Another rare RPG on Amazon Luna‘s Family channel, Sparklite takes a few pages from The Legend of Zelda‘s playbook, which is rarely a terrible thing. In this case, players must explore the region of Geodia in search of Titans to destroy en route to defeating this area’s evil Baron. However, Sparklite is a roguelite, so defeat results in the protagonist, Ada, returning back to a central hub world.

While roguelites are acquired tastes, Sparklite lessens the subgenre’s entry barrier by allowing players to upgrade Ada between runs through the installation of patches that provide an array of benefits. Now, this game can be quite difficult in places, so it is not the greatest entry-level RPG for very young children; however, older players looking for a charming indie title with a Zelda edge should find a lot to enjoy here.

Amazon Luna Channel Luna+
Release Date February 1, 2018
Subgenre Turn-Based Tactics, Roguelike
How Long to Beat (Main Story) 25 Hours
Amazon Luna Link Tangledeep

Amazon Luna has a good mix of well-known and obscure RPGs, and Tangledeep falls within the latter category. This indie title takes a few pages from classic SNES RPGs, particularly when it comes to its grueling difficulty. The game is also packed to the brim with content, and its procedurally-generated dungeons and roguelike elements ensure that most playthroughs are different.

RELATED: Best RPGs On The SNES, Ranked

Tangledeep has 12 classes, all of which have special quirks and strengths that make them unique entities that need to be individually mastered. In dungeons, players take part in turn-based combat where each movement counts as an action, meaning enemies will respond in kind. This game combines charming visuals, a good soundtrack, and replayability to establish itself as one of the best Amazon Luna RPGs.

Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night

Konami’s reluctance or disinterest in expanding the Castlevania universe has left a Metroidvania-shaped hole in the gaming sphere, and who better to fill that vacancy than that legendary franchise’s own Koji Igarashi? Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is very much a spiritual successor to Konami’s license, particularly Symphony of the Night; as Miriam, players work their way through an interweaving map, defeating bosses and unlocking new exploration-based abilities along the way.

Armed with a range of weapons and items, Bloodstained is not only a lot of fun to play but also diverse in its gameplay. The RPG also knocks its presentation out of the park, offering detailed environments, satisfying animations, and great music. As Ritual of the Night 2 is on the way, this is the ideal time to jump into this world.

Ys 8: Lacrimosa Of Dana

Amazon Luna Channel Luna+
Release Date April 16, 2018 (PC)
Subgenre Action JRPG
How Long to Beat (Main Story) 38 Hours
Amazon Luna Link Ys 8: Lacrimosa Of Dana

Nihon Falcom’s Ys might not have the mainstream appeal of a Final Fantasy or even Tales, but the series helped pioneer action JRPGs and has been a constant source for quality titles for more than three decades. Ys 8: Lacrimosa Of Dana is among the franchise’s greatest games, along with being one of the most accessible to modern audiences since it shifted the series fully into 3D territory. After a shipwreck, Adol ends up on a mysterious island filled with dangerous monsters and secrets yearning to be discovered. Before long, Adol adds a few people to his party, resulting in six playable characters.

Ys 8‘s story is decent and benefits from having a likable roster of core characters and an intriguing setting in the Isle of Seiren. However, the game’s appeal starts and ends with its battle system, which is an absolute blast. Players can swap between characters at the click of a button, and each warrior comes with their own weapon type, strengths, and weaknesses. Although hardly lacking in style, the combat is also reasonably challenging and deep enough to remain entertaining for the campaign’s sizable length.

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2: Warlords Of New York Ultimate Edition

An online-only action RPG might not sound like a great fit for a streaming gaming service, but Tom Clancy’s The Division 2: Warlords of New York Ultimate Edition is one of the best role-playing games on Amazon Luna. Debuting in 2019, The Division 2 garnered a positive reception at the time, and it has improved in a number of ways since then. The version on Amazon Luna includes The Warlords of New York expansion, which was generally well-received by the player base.

RELATED: Amazon Luna: Things You Didn’t Know You Could Do

While the game’s story can be a bit polarizing, The Division 2 shines in the gameplay and customization department. Even if someone has no intention of diving into the endgame, the main campaign is enjoyable enough to be worth recommending on its own.

Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling

Amazon Luna Channel Luna+
Release Date November 21, 2019
Subgenre Turn-Based Adventure
How Long to Beat (Main Story) 26 Hours
Amazon Luna Link Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling

Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling is a charming turn-based RPG that takes a few pages from the classic Paper Mario games. This influence can be seen in a number of ways: the heavy focus on puzzles, the vibrant visuals, the quirky sense of humor, and the mini-games infused combat. Also, similar to Paper Mario and The Thousand-Year Door, Bug Fables is fantastic.

Set in Bugaria, a trio of insects traverse a vast land in search of the mythical Everlasting Sapling. Their journey proves to be rife with danger, surprises, and whimsy. Be it the story or combat, Bug Fables gets everything nearly right, and the game can be appreciated by both adults and children.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla – Complete Edition

Ever since the release of Assassin’s Creed Origins, Ubisoft has been expanding this license’s role-playing ingredients. Valhalla is the closest this long-running series has come to producing a complete RPG, one that comes with a robust skill system and quite a few customization options.

RELATED: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Best Abilities, Ranked

Valhalla is a massive, ambitious game that features an engaging (if overly long) main storyline revolving around the Viking invasion of Britain. Although a bit too easy at times, the combat is enjoyable and hard-hitting, while the loot system keeps things fresh.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Amazon Luna Channel Luna+
Release Date February 13, 2018
Subgenre Open-World First-Person RPG
How Long to Beat (Main Story) 41 Hours
Amazon Luna Link Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Kingdom Come: Deliverance pushes authenticity to the forefront. Set during the 15th century, this RPG is not a power fantasy in any shape or form; every small victory needs to be earned, and this universe delivers realism without much room for fantasy. Consequently, Kingdom Come: Deliverance is an acquired taste that comes with a steep learning curve.

Offering an immersive open-world, challenging combat, and a fluid character customization system, Kingdom Come is one of the most immersive RPGs on Amazon Luna. Due to its steep learning curve, the game does have a slow start, but things should improve significantly once players become accustomed to its systems and mechanics.
