The very first Disney and Marvel Games Showcase has just wrapped up, and there was a surprising amount of announcements, including Skydance’s Marvel game. While the extremely fast 25-minute showcase didn’t have too many big reveals, there was plenty for Disney and Marvel fans to get excited about. However, one clear standout from the event was Skydance’s project, which was revealed for the very first time today.

Though its setting and premise were leaked earlier this morning, it’s now been officially confirmed that Skydance’s Marvel game will revolve around Black Panther and Captain America as they fight against Hydra during World War Two, something that fans likely didn’t guess when Skydance said it was developing an ensemble Marvel game. After revealing a scratched-up Captain America shield, the trailer ends on an image of four character silhouettes, with a tagline underneath that reads “Four Heroes, Two Worlds, One War,” and there are a few things that could mean.

What “Four Heroes, Two Worlds, One War” Could Mean

The first part of the tagline, “Four Heroes,” clearly refers to the four characters showcased at the end of the trailer. According to the game’s official description, these four include a younger Steve Rogers, presumably not long after he’s first taken the super soldier serum, and Black Panther, though this isn’t the version MCU fans will be accustomed to. Rather than T’Challa, or even his father T’Chaka, Skydance’s version of Black Panther will be Azzuri, T’Chaka’s father.

While Black Panther and Captain America’s silhouettes are fairly recognizable, even die-hard Marvel fans might struggle to determine the game’s other two characters. Again according to the official description of the game, these two characters are Gabriel Jones, and Nanali. Gabriel Jones is a U.S. soldier, and a member of the Howling Commandos, Cap’s right-hand team during WW2. Nanali, on the other hand, is the leader of the Wakandan Spy Network, and has a similar uniform to the Dora Milaje, the royal guard and elite forces of Wakanda. So, a younger Captain America, a fresher take on Black Panther, a member of the Howling Commandos, and a Wakandan elite forces spy make up the Skydance Marvel game’s “Four Heroes.”

The second part of the tagline, “Two Worlds,” might be the most interesting aspect of the entire trailer, with several possible connotations. While a multiverse story could be the most literal possibility, it could also be that “Two Worlds” refers to Wakanda and the U.S., with half of the heroes hailing from the futuristic African country, and the other two coming from the States. On a more thematic note, the “Two Worlds” could possibly refer to the differing political opinions of both nations during this era, with Wakanda being a more progressive nation in general, while the U.S. harbors some less-than-progressive ideals. It might be unlikely for a Marvel game to stray too much into themes of race and discrimination, but with the game set in World War Two, and three of its four main characters being Black, it seems like a fairly unavoidable theme, and glossing over the real-world issues of the time would be an odd and potentially problematic move for Skydance.

The final part of the tagline, “One War,” has another pretty straightforward answer. Based on the few images teased in the trailer, it seems as though Hydra will play a major role in the game, so the “One War” will almost definitely be the two forces, the U.S. and the Wakandans, coming together to defeat Hydra in the midst of World War Two, likely headed-up by the Red Skull and his usual team of poached Nazi scientists and generals.

Skydance’s Marvel Game is currently in development.
